In a meeting of Congress Working Committee (CWC) which was recently held in New Delhi, Sonia Gandhi had something to signal to the senior members of the party.
And then, she softly mentioned the subject regarding changing the leadership of the party with some senior leaders, which also includes former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Sonia wondered if Priyanka Gandhi will be made new Working President of the party.
A member of the CWC party has observed that Sonia definitely had something clear in her mind, and so, the party members didn’t take it as a casual question. The member also said that this must be a well-thought of move.
And yes, from a bunch of leaders of her party, Sonia’s this thought received strong support as well.
Even previously as well, the questions have been raised about giving Priyanka an official role in the party, but the family always sidestepped the talks. Priyanka has also restricted herself politically.
Sources have also reported that Sonia has discussed with few party leaders that the party has to put up a credible show in the next Lok Sabha elections. Hence, a young face should control and manage the party affairs. This will also include the process of strategising senior leaders.
“Whether we want to admit it or not, the truth is that the Gandhi family is the glue that binds this party. Even when a member of the family wasn’t at the forefront, like when PV Narasimha Rao was Prime Minister or when Sitaram Kesari was party president, the shadow of the family always loomed large. Despite attempts to malign the name of the family, there is little doubt that the Gandhis have a connect with voters in large parts of the country,” observed a senior Congress MP and a former minister.
However, the final discussion is yet to take place and will be held within couple of months.
Further, the Vice-President of the party, Rahul Gandhi, couldn’t attend the meeting because he is caught with a viral fever. Rahul was also in the queue of being the next Party President as waited by many out there.

Since 2014, the time when Narendra Modi made a spectacular victory in the Lok Sabha elections and became the PM of the country, Congress faced the departure of several prominent state-level leaders walking out of the party.
