68 years old M Venkaiah Naidu has been elected as India’s 13th Vice President. As Naidu comes from a humble background and managed to reach where he is today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his tweet has said, “I am confident @MVenkaiahNaidu will serve the nation as a diligent & dedicated Vice President, committed to the goal of nation building (sic).”
Talking about India’s new President Ram Nath Kovind, he also comes from a humble background like Naidu, but Kovind previously has been almost a politically unknown figure. Whereas, Naidu, on the other hand, has been a two-time Union minister and four-time Rajya Sabha member.
Not many know that Naidu has a talent for acronyms and he is a very good orator as well. So, here are such few facts about India’s 13th Vice President that might interest you:
- For these Vice Presidential elections, Naidu defeated Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Gopalkrishna Gandhi with 516 votes.
- Interestingly, he India’s third vice-president who hails from Andhra Pradesh. The other two are Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and VV Giri.
- Naidu was elected thrice from Karnataka Rajya Sabha and once from Rajasthan Rajya Sabha.
- He has also served as the BJP national president from July 2002 to October 2004.
- He is also credited with serving the nation as the Rural Development Minister.
- Thereafter, he has taken care of Parliamentary Affairs, Information and Broadcasting and Urban Development.
- He is known for having started several urban missions and Smart City Mission is one of those.
- Despite coming from Southern part of India, Naidu has learned Hindi well and he fluently speaks the National Language. He has also addressed many rallies in North India.

BJP head and Rajya Sabha MP Prabhat stated, “When he sits on the chair, he will be a just and fair person,” Jha told The Sunday Express. The Opposition is watching, said a senior Congress leader. “We will see how Naidu conducts the House. If he takes everyone along, we will cooperate, otherwise, the government will face a tough Opposition.”
