Rajesh Khanna’s Bunglow “Aashirwad” brought Bad Luck for his Career and Life!!
Rajesh Khanna was born on 29 December 1942, in Amritsar in the state of Punjab as Jatin Khanna. Khanna was adopted and raised by Chunnilal Khanna and Leelawati Khanna, who were relatives of his biological parents.
From the continuous success of the movies like, ‘Kati Patang’, ‘Aradhana’ and ‘Safar’ Rajesh Khanna was referred to as the “first superstar” of Indian cinema.
After hitting the stardom Rajesh Khanna wanted a sea-side Bunglow in Mumbai. He wanted to be able to admire the beauty of the sea from his home. At that time, only two bunglows were available near Juhu Beach. During that time someone told him that Rajendra Kumar wants to sell his Banglow, ‘Dimple’. It was as if Khanna’s wish has come true. The price of the bunglow was Rs.60,000. Inspite of being a superstar it was a huge amount for him to pay. Rajendra Kumar was not ready to reduce the price of the bunglow.
Rajesh Khanna asked many producers for their help but still he was not able to collect the huge amount. As if the luck was in Khanna’s favour, south’s famous director ‘Chinnappa Thevar’ wanted to make a film with Rajesh Khanna but Khanna wanted to do films only with famous Film-Makers. Chinnappa offered him something which he couldn’t resist. Chinnappa offered him 9 lakhs rupees which in itself was a record. Khanna desperately wanted to buy the bunglow so he grab the opportunity and said ,’YES’ to Chinnappa. Khanna was shocked when he heard the script of the film. The film was ‘Hathi Mere Sathi’. The protagonist of the film was ‘Hathi’ and Khanna was a supporting actor. Since he already was a superstar being a supportive actor would have shaken his career.
Khanna didn’t wanted to let go this opportunity. In this difficult time, Khanna gave big offer to the duo writers, ‘Salim-Javed’ to rewrite the script. In the new script the protagonist of the film was ‘Rajesh Khanna’ and ‘Hathi’ was in supportive role. During the shoots of the film Khanna brought the Bunglow from Rajesh Kumar. He spended all his money for the renovation of the bunglow. He named his bunglow as, ‘Ashirwaad’ and gave it a ‘Posh’ look.
People say that the bunglow is sinister for him. During his career he tried to sell it but couldn’t successed. During his disease his son-in-law, the famous actor ‘Akshay Kumar’ offered to buy the bunglow but Khanna was not ready for it.
At last after the death of Rajesh Khanna his wife ‘Dimple Kapadia’ sold it.
